A Free Press Shouldn’t Come with a Risk of Assault

Journalists in Los Angeles are facing an escalating crisis. In recent days, law enforcement officers have assaulted, detained, and even fired upon members of the press simply for doing their jobs — covering protests sparked by ICE raids and immigration crackdowns.

This is a direct attack on the First Amendment and a terrifying signal for press freedom in the United States.

CNN crews have been forcibly removed. Freelance and independent journalists have been pepper-sprayed, shoved to the ground, and hospitalized. Multiple news organizations and press freedom advocates — from PEN America to the Committee to Protect Journalists — are sounding the alarm.

We must act now to demand that the City of Los Angeles and the LAPD end their assault on the press and respect journalists' right to report freely and safely. A lawsuit has already been filed — but public pressure is critical to ensure systemic change.

Freedom of the press is not optional. It’s foundational.

Together, let’s stand up for truth and democracy.

Thanks,
Mary
