A new Supreme Court case could let billionaires flood our elections with unlimited cash — unless Congress acts now.
The Supreme Court is about to hear a case that could expand Citizens United and unleash a new flood of billionaire and corporate money into our elections.
In National Republican Senatorial Committee v. FEC, GOP leaders — including then-Senator J.D. Vance, who’s now Vice President — asked the Court to strike down limits on coordinated campaign spending between parties and candidates.
If they succeed, political parties could become unlimited pass-throughs for corporate and mega-donor cash — drowning out the voices of everyday voters entirely.
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and his colleagues have already filed an amicus brief urging the Court to reject this scheme. But they can’t do it alone. We need other members of Congress to step up — to file their own briefs, take a public stand, and make clear that our democracy is not for sale.
This is our moment to show that Americans are watching. The Brennan Center warns that we’re already living through “billion-dollar elections.” Expanding Citizens United would turn those elections into auctions — where money, not votes, decides who wins.
We can’t wait for the Court to decide the future of democracy behind closed doors. Public pressure can move Congress and the administration to act now — to defend fair elections before it’s too late.
Thanks,
Mary
