An ICE Operation Shouldn’t Mean Losing Your Home

As Operation Metro Surge expands ICE and Customs and Border Patrol activity across the Twin Cities, immigrant families are afraid to leave their homes. According to MPR News, workers are missing shifts and losing income because stepping outside could result in detention. Sahan Journal reports that in many households, the primary breadwinner has been detained, cutting off rent money overnight.

The result is predictable and devastating: families falling behind on rent and facing eviction through no fault of their own.

Local leaders are sounding the alarm. In January, the Minneapolis City Council formally called on Governor Tim Walz to issue a temporary eviction moratorium in response to the ICE surge, as reported by MPR News and Truthout. Officials in St. Paul have echoed that demand, urging state leaders to freeze evictions and utility shut-offs before the crisis spirals further, according to the Twin Cities Pioneer Press.

During COVID-19, Governor Walz used his emergency authority to issue a statewide eviction moratorium to prevent mass displacement. As CBS News reports, advocates and community members are now urging him to use that same authority again—because this is another state-created emergency.

Legal aid groups are already seeing the fallout. Families are being forced to choose between safety and survival. Evictions under these conditions will push people into homelessness, overwhelm shelters, and deepen fear in communities already under attack.

Thanks,
Mary
