Apple and Google Are Gatekeepers — and Grok Is Still Getting a Pass

Reporting by The Guardian and CNBC shows that Grok, the AI system owned by Elon Musk through xAI, is being used to generate graphic, sexualized deepfake images, including content that appears to depict minors. Despite this evidence, Grok remains available in Apple and Google’s App Stores.

This is especially concerning given recent enforcement. Engadget and CNBC report that Apple and Google have removed dozens of AI “nudify” apps after warnings they were being used to sexually exploit women and children. Yet Grok, which reporting shows can generate even more explicit and abusive content, remains accessible.

WIRED reports that Grok produces sexual content far more graphic than what is allowed on X. NBC News and PBS NewsHour have documented victims whose likenesses were used to create non-consensual sexual images, with weak safeguards and ineffective removal.

Regulators are responding. TechCrunch reports that California’s Attorney General has issued a cease-and-desist order to xAI, and U.S. Senators are demanding answers from Apple and Google about why apps linked to sexualized deepfakes remain available.

Apple and Google’s App Store rules prohibit apps that facilitate sexual exploitation. App stores are gatekeepers. By removing "nudify" apps but continuing to host Grok, Apple is failing to enforce its own standards consistently.

Thanks,
