Break Up the Live Nation Monopoly Now
For years, Live Nation has fleeced fans with unnecessary ancillary fees, turning what should be a joyful experience into a source of frustration and financial strain. Its merger with Ticketmaster has allowed it to dominate the live music industry, pushing out competition and leaving concertgoers with little choice but to pay exorbitant prices.
While the Department of Justice has reached a settlement with Live Nation and Ticketmaster, that agreement falls short of addressing the full scope of harm. That’s why 39 state attorneys general are continuing forward with their antitrust lawsuit, signaling that states across the country recognize this monopoly as a serious and ongoing threat to consumers.
Reporting from The New York Times reveals that Live Nation employees were caught in internal communications admitting to unnecessarily raising fees, at times even mocking fans. This behavior is only possible in a market where competition has been crushed.
As The New York Times has documented for years, Live Nation–Ticketmaster’s dominance has steadily tightened, leaving fans and artists with fewer choices and higher costs. The current situation makes clear that partial measures are not enough.
Only structural reform can restore competition, protect consumers, and ensure fairness in the live music marketplace.
Fans deserve better. It’s time to end this monopoly.
Thanks,
Mary
