Congress Moves to End Trump’s D.C. Police Takeover — Keep the Pressure On

According to Axios and The Hill, congressional Democrats have introduced legislation to terminate Trump’s federalization of D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department and restore local control. Representative Jamie Raskin, Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, and Senator Chris Van Hollen are leading the charge, warning that Trump’s takeover “sets a dangerous precedent for authoritarian rule.”

The legislation comes after weeks of protests from D.C. residents outraged by federal agents running checkpoints in their own neighborhoods. But Trump isn’t backing down. He’s still pushing to extend military occupation of the city under the banner of a “crime crackdown” — and Republicans in Congress are standing with him.

Our signatures are building pressure, but we need to make this movement impossible to ignore. If we can show that tens of thousands more Americans across the country are watching, we can strengthen the hand of those in Congress fighting to end this power grab.

Trump is betting that outrage will fade. Let’s prove him wrong and make sure Congress has no choice but to defend democracy in D.C. — and everywhere.
