Congress Must Hit Pause on New AI Data Centers Before the Damage Gets Worse
Congress must immediately impose a nationwide moratorium on new AI data centers to prevent these projects from deepening the energy and environmental crisis already unfolding across the country.
The danger is escalating fast. Politico reported that Elon Musk’s xAI sought permits for massive gas turbines in Memphis that would add more pollution to communities already overwhelmed by industrial emissions. Common Dreams reported that AI-driven electricity demand is so extreme that utilities are restarting fossil-fuel plants. The Guardian has shown that data center clusters are straining power grids nationwide and driving up household energy bills.
And this isn’t a partisan fight. Reuters found that even many Trump voters oppose these facilities because they threaten local water supplies, increase pollution, and raise utility costs. When communities across political lines are sounding the alarm, Congress must act.
A moratorium is the only responsible step while lawmakers assess the actual environmental and economic impacts. Food & Water Watch and other environmental groups warn that unchecked AI expansion locks the country into massive energy use, heavy water consumption, and new fossil fuel dependence. Without congressional action, companies will keep rushing permits through before communities understand what they stand to lose.
By acting now, we can stop harmful projects, demand transparency, and hold corporations accountable.
Lawmakers are setting their 2025 agenda right now. This is our narrow window to halt another wave of high-impact permits.
Thanks,
Mary
