Congress Must Investigate Trump's Political Retaliation Against States

The Trump administration has ordered a sweeping federal review of funding sent to 14 Democratic-led states and Washington, D.C., with agencies required to report back by January 28. According to CNN, the Washington Post, and the New York Times, the review explicitly targets states that voted for Kamala Harris in 2024 and could lead to billions of dollars being frozen or canceled.

This move follows a pattern. Courts have already blocked multiple Trump administration attempts to halt child care, welfare, and social service funding, with judges warning that the president cannot override Congress’s power of the purse. Reporting from Politico and The Hill confirms that several freezes were paused after states sued, citing unconstitutional political retaliation.

At the same time, the administration has deployed the National Guard, ICE, and Customs and Border Patrol into Democratic-led cities under false claims of fraud and disorder. Civil rights experts warn this combination of funding threats and federal force is designed to intimidate communities and punish political opposition, not protect public safety.

Thanks,
