Congress Must Reject Trump’s Voter Suppression Bills

Donald Trump is openly calling for the federal government to take over U.S. elections, based on his thoroughly debunked lie that the 2020 election was “stolen.”

According to reporting from The Hill and Democracy Docket, House Republicans are now advancing legislation that mirrors Trump’s demands. The SAVE Act and the MEGA Act would centralize control over elections and impose extreme new requirements that could block millions of eligible Americans from voting.

Voting rights experts cited by the Brennan Center for Justice warn that more than 21 million U.S. citizens lack immediate access to the documents these bills would require, putting young voters, seniors, low-income Americans, rural voters, and voters of color at risk of disenfranchisement.

This isn’t just a progressive warning. The libertarian Cato Institute has slammed the MEGA Act for dramatically expanding federal power over elections. The Hill reports that Republican Senator Rand Paul has also rejected Trump’s push to nationalize elections, saying the Constitution clearly leaves election administration to the states.

When even conservative and libertarian leaders are sounding the alarm, Congress should listen.

Votes and procedural moves on these bills could happen in the coming weeks, according to NBC News and Axios. Public pressure right now can make the difference, but only if lawmakers feel it.

Thanks,
Mary
