Congress Must Stop Funding ICE’s Abuse
Congress continues to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security despite clear evidence of deadly enforcement practices, preventable deaths in custody, and the use of excessive force.
Block Club Chicago, The Los Angeles Times, and The New York Times have each reported on deaths linked to ICE raids, detention, or federal enforcement operations. According to The Guardian, 32 people died in ICE custody in 2025 – the highest rate in 20 years. The Hill reports that four migrants have already died in ICE custody in 2026, raising serious concerns about medical neglect and agency accountability. In New York City, NY1 reported on a vigil for immigrants who died in ICE custody as federal agents continued enforcement actions.
According to the ACLU, roughly 95 percent of deaths in ICE detention could likely have been prevented with adequate medical care. Senators Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff have publicly pressed the administration over these deaths, citing a lack of transparency and oversight.
Despite this record, Congress has failed to act.
Thanks,
Mary
