Congress Must Stop ICE From Targeting Refugees
Recent reporting from CNN and The Washington Post reveals a dangerous new Trump administration memo that allows ICE to arrest and detain refugees who have been in the United States for one year but have not yet received a green card.
Refugees are among the most heavily vetted people admitted to this country. As Reuters and NPR report, the screening process can take years and includes intensive background checks, security screenings, and interviews before refugees are ever allowed to enter the U.S. They came here legally, seeking safety from war and persecution.
Now, according to CNN and The Guardian, ICE is being directed to treat them as detention targets simply because of paperwork delays. This reverses a 2010 policy that protected refugees from arrest based solely on green card processing issues and could put hundreds of thousands of people at risk.
This isn’t about public safety. It’s about expanding Trump’s mass deportation machine.
Congress has the power to stop this. Lawmakers can block funding, demand DHS rescind the memo, and hold oversight hearings to protect legal refugees from wrongful detention.
Refugees followed the rules. Congress must act now to ensure ICE cannot turn legal status into a trap.
Thanks,
Mary
