Congress Must Stop Trump’s War With Iran
The U.S. launched strikes on Iran this weekend without authorization from Congress — and the consequences are already unfolding.
According to The Guardian, President Trump acknowledged there will likely be more deaths as the military campaign escalates. NPR reports that members of Congress in both parties are now weighing a War Powers Resolution to rein in the president’s unilateral action. Meanwhile, The New York Times details how U.S. warplanes have expanded operations across the region, raising fears of a broader conflict.
Let’s be clear: The Constitution gives Congress — not the president — the power to declare war. Yet once again, we are being pulled into a potentially catastrophic Middle East war without a vote.
There is also no credible public evidence that Iran was actively building a nuclear weapon that justified launching this attack. As Common Dreams and other outlets have noted, lawmakers like Rep. Ro Khanna are warning that Americans are tired of regime-change wars built on shaky legal and factual grounds.
Congress can stop this — but only if they feel overwhelming public pressure.
A bipartisan War Powers Resolution would force a vote to end unauthorized hostilities. It would make every member of Congress go on record: Do they support unchecked presidential war-making, or do they stand by the Constitution?
We need action now — before more lives are lost and this war spirals further out of control.
Thanks,
Mary
