According to Common Dreams and Reuters, Trump is now seeking to extend federal control over D.C.’s police indefinitely. His handpicked acting police chief — appointed without D.C.’s consent — is working alongside Attorney General Pam Bondi to cement federal authority over the city’s streets.

Meanwhile, Truthout reports that D.C. residents are protesting federal agents running military-style checkpoints in their own neighborhoods. NPR confirms that Trump’s plan would keep local leaders sidelined for as long as he deems “necessary.”

This is not temporary. This is not about safety. This is about entrenching an authoritarian grip over a majority-Black city that has repeatedly rejected Trump’s politics — and setting the stage to do the same in other communities.

We cannot let this stand.

If we grow this movement from 15,000 to 50,000 in the next week, we can send an undeniable message to lawmakers that the American people will not tolerate the erosion of local democracy.
