Tell Democrats to protect civil society groups now!

Yesterday, senior White House figures used an official platform to vow a federal “crackdown” on left-leaning organizations — naming major foundations and suggesting the government could target their tax status. Vice President JD Vance hosted a special episode of The Charlie Kirk Show from the White House and singled out specific institutions, while a senior official said a list of “left-wing organizations” is being compiled and tax-exempt status changes are on the table. That’s political retaliation against lawful advocacy — and Democrats must fight back. 

Facts matter. Reporters note that key claims about foundation funding cited by officials don’t check out, and authorities have not established a motive for the killing at the center of these threats. Yet the rhetoric is escalating, and the policy levers being discussed — DOJ, DHS, IRS, and tax law — could chill free speech and association if misused

Democratic leadership and key committees must initiate immediate oversight into any planned designations or tax actions against nonprofits based on ideology, and to advance protections reaffirming First Amendment rights for charities, media, and advocacy groups.
