Democrats Can Stop Funding ICE — If They Act Now
Democratic leaders have days, not weeks, to act before the January 30 government funding deadline. And once again, they’re on track to keep funding ICE.
On January 7, ICE agents killed Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, during a DHS operation in Minneapolis. The shooting sparked national outrage and protests, with coverage from CNN, NBC News, and The Independent highlighting renewed calls for accountability.
Yet despite that backlash, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries are refusing to support growing demands within their own party to cut or condition ICE funding. Truthout reports that leadership is unwilling to use the funding deadline as leverage — even after a civilian was killed.
According to Common Dreams, the January 30 deadline gives Democrats real power: without their votes, a funding deal can’t pass. NBC News has reported that lawmakers know budget votes are one of the only tools Congress has to force change at DHS. Passing a clean funding bill now would once again shield ICE from consequences.
This is a moment of choice. Democrats can use this deadline to demand cuts and accountability — or approve another blank check and move on.
We’re calling on Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jeffries, and Democratic appropriators to refuse any government funding bill that includes unrestricted ICE funding.
Thanks,
Mary
