DHS Is Expanding Detention Despite Deadly Warnings
The Trump administration is quietly moving forward with a dangerous plan to expand immigration detention at a massive scale.
According to reports from NBC News and Bloomberg, the Department of Homeland Security is buying and leasing large warehouses across the country to convert them into mega-immigration detention centers. The goal is to help carry out Donald Trump’s plan to deport one million people per year.
These facilities would hold men, women, and children in buildings never designed for human detention. And the risks are already clear. NBC News reports that three people have died in ICE detention in just 44 days, with one death ruled a homicide. The Washington Post and Truthout have documented overcrowding, unsanitary conditions, and inadequate medical care at existing facilities, including outbreaks of infectious disease affecting detained children.
Despite these warnings, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem and ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons are accelerating the expansion of detention. The ACLU has warned that warehouse-style facilities pose serious health and safety risks and fail to meet basic standards for humane care.
DHS depends on congressional funding, local permits, and political cover to open new detention sites. As Axios and the San Francisco Chronicle report, community opposition and local leadership have already slowed or blocked detention plans in multiple cities.
This is a critical moment. Once these warehouses open, people will be locked inside with little oversight and even less accountability.
Thanks,
Mary
