Don’t Let ICE Turn Airports Into Deportation Zones

Airports should be places where people feel safe traveling — not where families fear being targeted.

But according to reporting from Al Jazeera and The Guardian, Donald Trump has threatened to deploy ICE agents into U.S. airports amid the ongoing Homeland Security funding crisis, even suggesting they would help remove undocumented immigrants from travel hubs. Civil rights groups warn this would fundamentally change what it means to travel in America.

The ACLU has warned that deploying armed ICE agents to airports will create fear in families and travelers and represents the first time a president has sent ICE agents to replace trained security personnel. CNN reports that TSA experts have confirmed that ICE agents have no practical role in airport security and that adding them will not improve safety.

While Democrats have repeatedly introduced legislation to fund TSA workers without strings attached, Republicans in Congress continue blocking these efforts to force through funding for ICE without reforms. This political game is putting travelers at risk and creating a dangerous environment at airports nationwide.

ICE has no place in our nation's airports. Their presence creates fear, disrupts security operations, and targets people based on their immigration status. The Trump administration's plan to use airport security as a pretext for immigration enforcement is dangerous.

This is a manufactured crisis—and we have the power to stop it.

Airports should never become extensions of a deportation system rooted in fear.

Thanks,
Mary
