Families can’t afford corporate price games
Every time you step into the grocery store, algorithms may be silently raising your prices — charging you more for the same essentials, often based on your personal data. This isn’t just unfair — it’s exploitation.
That’s why Rep. Rashida Tlaib has introduced H.R. 4966, the Stop Price Gouging in Grocery Stores Act. This bill would ban surveillance-driven dynamic pricing and electronic shelf label manipulation, and finally give the FTC the power to hold grocery corporations accountable.
Grocery prices have already spiked more than 28% since 2020. Nearly 47 million Americans — including 7 million children — are food insecure. Meanwhile, retailers are experimenting with tech that lets them raise prices on water during heatwaves or charge higher rates based on your shopping history. These tactics hit working families the hardest, especially in Black and brown communities.
Congress must act before the end of this session — but lawmakers will only move if they feel the pressure from us.
Together, we can shut down corporate abuse and demand fair, transparent prices for everyone.
Thanks,
Mary
