ICE Is Only 23 Years Old — and It’s Already Killed Again
On January 7, 2026, Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother, poet, and Minneapolis resident, was shot and killed by an ICE agent during a federal immigration enforcement action in South Minneapolis. Reporting from the Washington Post, the Guardian, the Independent, and the Star Tribune confirms that Renee was a U.S. citizen and was not accused of a violent crime. Video reviewed by multiple outlets shows ICE agents surrounding her vehicle before an agent fired, killing her.
According to the Guardian and the Star Tribune, the shooting occurred during a large-scale interior immigration operation tied to an expanded federal crackdown. Federal officials have defended the agent’s actions, but eyewitness accounts and video evidence have raised serious questions. Minneapolis officials have condemned the operation and called for ICE to leave the city, while protests have continued for days.
CNN has reported on ICE’s growing unpopularity nationwide as its enforcement tactics have escalated. Common Dreams notes that advocates and civil rights groups are describing Renee Good’s killing as a breaking point, renewing calls to dismantle the agency. ICE was created only 23 years ago, in 2003, yet it now wields enormous power with devastating consequences for communities.
Renee Nicole Good’s life mattered. Her death demands accountability and change.
Thanks,
Mary
