ICE Promised “Dangerous Criminals.” Instead, Children Are Paying the Price
ICE agents are detaining and terrorizing children — despite the administration’s claim that enforcement targets “dangerous criminals.” Children are not criminals. And what’s happening right now demands immediate action.
In the past week alone, MPR News, The New York Times, ProPublica, and PBS NewsHour have reported on ICE operations that have traumatized kids across Minnesota and beyond. A five-year-old child was detained after agents allegedly used him as bait. ICE activity near schools has sent children into panic, with families afraid to send their kids to class. Other reports describe children exposed to raids, tear gas, and unsafe detention conditions.
Medical experts and child welfare advocates have long warned that exposure to aggressive law enforcement causes lasting harm to children, including anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and post-traumatic stress. This is not public safety. It is state-inflicted trauma.
Congress has the power — and the responsibility — to investigate ICE’s detention of children and its conduct in schools and communities. Silence is complicity.
Thanks,
Mary
