ICE’s Surveillance Power Grab Must Be Investigated

ICE is expanding a surveillance system that can track where people go, who they meet, and even scan their faces in public — and lawmakers say it demands urgent scrutiny.

According to NPR and Mother Jones, ICE agents are now using a mobile facial recognition tool called Mobile Fortify that lets officers scan someone’s face with a phone and instantly search massive government databases. The tool has reportedly already been used more than 100,000 times in the field.

At the same time, reporting highlighted by Politico and Common Dreams shows DHS agencies have been buying Americans’ location data from private brokers – information that can reveal visits to doctors’ offices, religious services, and other deeply personal details.

But people across the country are fighting back. Privacy advocates, immigrant rights groups, and members of Congress are pushing for answers — and public pressure can force real accountability.

Senator Ron Wyden and more than 70 members of Congress are now calling for an investigation into DHS and ICE’s warrantless surveillance practices, warning that the data purchases may violate federal law and the Fourth Amendment.

Thanks,
Mary
