It’s time to ban conversion therapy nationwide

For decades, conversion therapy has been pushed under the false promise that LGBTQ+ people can — and should — be changed. But the truth is clear, and it’s been confirmed again and again by science, survivors, and even major news outlets: this practice is not just ineffective — it’s deeply harmful.

The American Psychological Association has explicitly rejected so-called “sexual orientation change efforts,” warning that they can lead to serious mental health consequences. Reporting and analysis from outlets like The Hill and MS NOW have highlighted how these practices continue to harm LGBTQ+ youth, often leaving lasting psychological scars. According to research cited by UCLA’s Williams Institute and covered in national conversations, thousands of young people in the U.S. are still subjected to conversion therapy each year.

Investigations and advocacy by organizations like the Human Rights Campaign have exposed the dangerous myths behind conversion therapy — showing how it is rooted in stigma, not science. And medical experts, including those at Stanford, have reinforced what survivors have long said: these practices increase risks of depression, anxiety, and suicide.

Yet despite all of this, there is still no federal ban.

Right now, whether a young person is protected depends entirely on where they live. Some states have taken action, but many have not — leaving countless LGBTQ+ youth vulnerable to abuse disguised as care.

We have a chance to change that.

Congress can pass a federal ban on conversion therapy and finally ensure that no young person, anywhere in this country, is subjected to these dangerous practices. But it will take public pressure to make it happen.

Together, we can protect young people, stand up for science, and affirm the dignity of every person.

Thanks,
Mary
