Journalism Should Serve the Public, Not Prediction Markets

Axios recently reported that CNN has partnered with Kalshi, a prediction-market app that allows users to bet on the outcome of real-world events.

That reality should alarm everyone who cares about honest journalism, civic trust, and the integrity of news. By embedding live betting odds into coverage of politics, disasters, or anything from weather to war, CNN is blurring the line between sober reporting and a gambling floor.

Kalshi is also facing serious legal challenges. Reuters reports that a federal judge in Nevada ruled the company is subject to state gaming regulations. Massachusetts’s attorney general is similarly seeking to block Kalshi for allegedly operating an unlicensed sports-betting market. Despite these red flags, CNN is moving ahead—and Adweek and Business Insider note that other networks are now exploring similar partnerships.

We’re calling on CNN CEO Mark Thompson and network leadership to end this deal immediately. News should serve the public interest, not betting markets.

Thanks,
Mary
