Justice Can’t Wait: Congress Must Abolish Qualified Immunity
In January, another family was devastated after a fatal encounter with federal immigration agents — a tragedy that has reignited national outrage over qualified immunity and the sweeping protections it gives federal officers.
Now Rep. Ayanna Pressley and Sen. Edward Markey are pushing Congress to act, calling for passage of the Qualified Immunity Abolition Act so families can finally seek justice when civil rights are violated. Reuters has detailed how this judge-made doctrine makes it nearly impossible for victims to win in court — effectively letting misconduct go unpunished.
This isn’t abstract. It’s happening right now in our communities.
According to The Lever, momentum is growing among Democrats to strip qualified immunity from federal officers, including ICE, but only if constituents demand it. And reports are clear: accountability saves lives, but Congress won’t move without massive public pressure.
Every delay protects misconduct. Every delay denies justice.
Thanks,
Mary
