Keep the Heat On: Fully Fund the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program
Winter is coming fast, and the federal shutdown has stalled critical heating assistance for millions of families. According to The Washington Post and NPR, states that rely on the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) can’t distribute funds until the government reopens, leaving families in the cold.
Earlier this year, NBC News reported that President Trump fired the entire federal LIHEAP staff and pushed to eliminate the program, leaving $378 million in approved aid stranded. Now, with the shutdown dragging on, those reckless decisions are turning into a humanitarian crisis.
Heating costs are expected to rise nearly 8% this winter, Marketplace notes, and state agencies warn that without immediate action, funds may not reach families until mid-December — long after temperatures plunge.
Congress can fix this right now. We’re demanding that lawmakers fully fund LIHEAP in the next spending bill and direct HHS to release emergency funds immediately.
Public pressure works. When enough of us speak out, Congress moves. Every signature raises the political cost of inaction and forces lawmakers to prioritize people over politics.
Thanks,
Mary
