Masked federal agents shouldn’t operate in the shadows
Masked federal immigration agents are operating without visible identification — and alarm bells are ringing nationwide.
The Guardian reports lawmakers warning these tactics resemble “secret police” behavior and fuel fear and impersonation crimes. Human Rights Watch says masked, unidentifiable agents undermine the rule of law. The Center for American Progress warns that when officers can’t be identified, accountability and public safety collapse.
This is happening now.
That’s why Congress has introduced the bicameral VISIBLE Act. In the House, Rep. Veronica Escobar and her colleagues are demanding clear identification for immigration officers. In the Senate, Senator Elissa Slotkin has introduced companion legislation that designates identification as a basic public safety standard.
No one should have to guess whether the person detaining them is a real federal agent.
As enforcement actions expand, Congress is running out of time. We need a vote on the VISIBLE Act before the next recess.
Thanks,
Mary
