No Authorization, No Excuse: End Trump’s War on Venezuela

U.S. military strikes and the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro were carried out without congressional authorization, in direct violation of the Constitution. As The New Yorker reports, legal scholars agree the president has no authority to order this kind of military action, let alone declare that the United States will “run” another country.

International law has also been violated. According to The Guardian, the United Nations Security Council has condemned the attack as a breach of the U.N. Charter and rejected the administration’s justification. PBS NewsHour and NPR have also shown that Trump’s stated reasons for the strike do not hold up to scrutiny.

The consequences are already devastating. Democracy Now! has reported civilian harm and widespread fear inside Venezuela, while BBC News warns this action risks regional instability and global escalation.

Congress alone has the power to declare war. Lawmakers must immediately invoke the War Powers Resolution, hold hearings on this illegal operation, and block any funding for further military action or occupation.

If Congress fails to act, it sets a dangerous precedent that any president can wage war without accountability. We urge you to contact your representatives today and demand an end to Trump’s illegal war on Venezuela.

Thanks,
Mary
