Protect Kids’ Private Medical Records From Trump’s DOJ

Trump’s Department of Justice is trying to use children’s private medical records as a weapon against them and their doctors.

Hospitals across the country are receiving sweeping subpoenas from the DOJ demanding sensitive information about minors who received gender-affirming care.

When the federal government can seize private medical records for political reasons, no patient’s privacy is truly safe. Today, Trump’s DOJ is targeting transgender kids. Tomorrow, it could be anyone whose health care becomes a political target.

Tell Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and the DOJ: Withdraw every subpoena targeting trans kids’ medical records and end this abuse of power now.

In New York, NYU Langone said a grand jury subpoena sought records on patients under 18. In California, the DOJ backed down only after families fought its demand for records from Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. And now, a federal judge just sharply criticized the DOJ while blocking them from accessing confidential records from Rhode Island Hospital.

No parent should have to wonder whether the government is building a file on their child. No doctor should be threatened for treating a patient. No hospital should be pressured into betraying the trust that makes health care possible.

Public pressure can raise the political cost, back up hospitals resisting these demands, and help force the DOJ to back down.

Trans kids are the immediate target. But medical privacy itself is on the line.
