Rep. Mikie Sherrill’s military file was exposed. Congress must investigate now.
The National Archives’ National Personnel Records Center released Rep. Mikie Sherrill’s military file with only minimal redactions. This was not a clerical error — it was a shocking breach of trust and security. Members of Congress, especially those who served in our armed forces, should never have to fear that their own government will put their families at risk by mishandling sensitive military files.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other Democratic leaders have already called for an investigation, warning that this could set a dangerous precedent for the treatment of veterans’ records.
The release of Rep. Sherrill’s personal records isn’t just a violation of her privacy — it’s an attack on the integrity of our democratic system. If a sitting member of Congress can have her most sensitive information exposed, what does that mean for everyday service members and veterans who trust the government with their data?
The National Archives has already admitted responsibility, but apologies aren’t enough. We need a full Congressional investigation to uncover how this happened, who approved it, and what safeguards will be put in place to ensure it never happens again. Anything less leaves every veteran and public servant vulnerable.
This is about accountability, transparency, and basic security. The stakes couldn’t be higher. Every day without action risks normalizing the exposure of sensitive personal information for the sake of political or bureaucratic convenience.
Thanks,
Mary
