Say NO to the Union Pacific–Norfolk Southern Mega-Merger
America’s railroads are in crisis, and things are about to get worse. Union Pacific wants to swallow Norfolk Southern and create the first coast-to-coast freight railroad in U.S. history. This dangerous deal would give a handful of corporations nearly total control over our rail system, driving up costs, slashing service, endangering workers, and putting Wall Street profits over our communities.
The people who know railroads best are sounding the alarm. Railroad Workers United warns that past mergers have caused chaos, leaving shippers stranded, workers overextended, and communities vulnerable. The largest rail union, SMART, has spoken out forcefully, condemning Union Pacific’s hostile treatment of workers and troubling safety record. They insist that no more power should be entrusted to a company with such a track record.
Railroad Workers United has stressed that this merger has nothing to do with improving service or serving the public — it is simply a scheme to line the pockets of investors at everyone else’s expense.
History tells us what happens when these deals are allowed to go through. Rail consolidations don’t bring efficiency; they bring breakdowns, lost cargo, dangerous working conditions, and skyrocketing prices. Communities, passengers, and shippers will all pay the price while corporate executives and investors reap the rewards.
This is a moment to stand together and demand better. The Surface Transportation Board has the power to block this reckless merger, but they need to hear from us. A rail system should serve the public good, not just corporate greed.
Thanks,
Mary
