Senate Democrats Fractured — and Millions Could Pay the Price
When eight Senate Democrats broke ranks and voted with Republicans to end the shutdown, Chuck Schumer couldn’t keep his caucus together — and now millions risk losing their health care coverage.
This weekend’s shutdown deal was a disaster for working families. The Senate passed a short-term funding bill that reopened the government — but left out an extension of the Affordable Care Act tax credits that keep coverage affordable for 22 million Americans.
Schumer opposed the deal himself, but his inability to unify his caucus handed Republicans a win. The agreement promises only a future vote on health care, with no guarantees. Families could face higher premiums or lose coverage entirely when subsidies expire early next year.
Progressive organizations like MoveOn are raising the alarm, urging stronger leadership and a clear strategy before the next funding deadline hits in January. Coverage from Axios, CNN, Politico, The Hill, and The Guardian highlights growing frustration among Democrats and grassroots supporters over the party’s fractured response.
The stakes couldn’t be higher. If Senate Democrats can’t stay united now, Republicans will keep dictating the terms — and ordinary people will pay the price.
We need Democratic leaders to hear from all of us: hold your caucus together, fight for working families, and don’t let this happen again.
Add your name to demand accountability from Senate Democratic leadership before the next shutdown deadline.
Thanks,
Mary
