Sign the petition: Reject the SAVE Act voter suppression bill

Congress is back in session, and the Senate is expected to vote on the SAVE Act any day now.

The SAVE Act is a voter suppression bill that would require people to produce proof of citizenship documents when they register to vote or update their voter registration. This has the potential to upend voter registration drives and online voter registration. It also carries a criminal penalty for registering someone to vote who didn’t show citizenship documentation.

It’s already illegal for non-citizens to vote in federal elections. The SAVE Act is a terrible solution to a non-existent problem.

This bill would unnecessarily complicate voter registration and prevent millions of Americans from having their voices heard at the ballot box. Millions of married people have changed their last name after getting married, so not all citizenship documents, like a birth certificate, social security card, or passport, match. Plus, as many as 21 million people don’t have documents proving citizenship readily available.

The bill needs 60 votes to pass in the Senate, and Republicans have a seven-seat majority. Five Democrats voted for the bill in the House, and we need to make sure that doesn’t happen in the Senate.

Thanks,

Mary
