Speaker Mike Johnson: Seat Adelita Grijalva Now — Let Arizona’s Voice Be Heard
Arizona voters have spoken — but House Speaker Mike Johnson refuses to listen.
Adelita Grijalva decisively won her special election weeks ago, yet Johnson is still blocking her from being sworn into Congress. Arizona certified her victory, but the House has been adjourned while the government shutdown continues. Johnson could swear her in at any time, yet he has chosen not to — leaving Arizonans without representation.
According to Axios and Politico, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has warned Johnson that his refusal to seat Grijalva could lead to legal action if he does not act immediately. Senators Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego told The Guardian that Johnson’s delay is a partisan abuse of power that undermines democracy. Even the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the League of Women Voters have issued formal letters urging her immediate swearing-in.
Meanwhile, the Associated Press reports that Grijalva’s vote could be decisive on key matters — including a motion to release the complete Epstein investigative files. By blocking her, Johnson is silencing more than 700,000 constituents and obstructing the democratic process.
This is about more than one seat. It’s about whether voters decide who represents them — or whether political power plays in Washington can override the will of the people.
Public pressure works. When enough of us speak out, the media and lawmakers take notice. Every call, every signature, every headline increases the cost of Johnson’s delay. We need to make it impossible for him to ignore this.
Thanks,
Mary
