Stop DHS from Surveilling Churches, Unions and Activists
Trump’s Department of Homeland Security didn’t just monitor protesters in Minnesota. It sent an undercover agent into a church with a hidden recording device.
More details are coming out about DHS's ominously named “Operation Puppet Master” focused on activists, unions, and community groups opposed to the administration’s immigration crackdown. And the facts are terrifying.
DHS used federal law enforcement powers to monitor people engaged in constitutionally protected activity. Now Congress needs to find out how far this operation went and stop it from happening again.
Court records show investigators monitored meetings and communications connected to multiple organizations. In one extraordinary episode, an undercover DHS agent reportedly entered University Baptist Church in Minneapolis carrying a concealed recorder. The device fell to the floor, exposing the surveillance.
Law enforcement can investigate real crimes. But criticizing ICE, attending a protest, joining a union, organizing with neighbors, or gathering inside a church aren’t crimes – and they should never be enough to put someone under secret government surveillance.
Congress must determine who approved Operation Puppet Master, who they spied on, and why.
That scrutiny is needed now, before secret surveillance of political, religious, and civic activity becomes normalized.
Thanks for all that you do,
