Stop the $200 Billion Blank Check for War with Iran
The Pentagon has asked for another $200 billion to fund the war with Iran
That’s on top of tens of billions already spent in just the first weeks of the conflict, with early costs already reaching around $25 billion, according to the Center for American Progress.
Now Congress is being asked to approve a massive escalation — despite serious questions from lawmakers in both parties and no clear explanation of how the money would be used or how long the war will last.
At a time when families are struggling to afford basic necessities, this request would pour $200 billion more into war instead of investing in people. According to analyses from The Century Foundation and Forbes, that same $200 billion could cancel medical debt for roughly 100 million Americans, provide free school meals to every child in the country for more than a decade, and fund community college for millions of students.
It could also expand affordable child care for families who desperately need it, fully fund special education services for students with disabilities, and sustain health care coverage for millions of people who would otherwise go without it.
Other analyses show that the same amount could strengthen Medicaid, expand food assistance, invest in early childhood education, and support veterans’ care, rather than fueling more conflict at home and abroad.
Lawmakers have warned that a $200 billion request signals a much longer and more expensive war than the public has been told — one that could stretch on indefinitely while draining resources from urgent needs here at home.
And this war was launched without proper congressional authorization, raising serious concerns about accountability and Congress’s constitutional role in decisions of war and peace.
We cannot afford another endless war.
Congress must reject this $200 billion request.
The choice is simple: invest in people, or fund more war.
Thanks,
Mary
