Stop the USDA From Sabotaging SNAP in Democratic-Led States
According to new reporting from The Washington Post, ABC7, and Common Dreams, the USDA is blocking the administrative funds that states need to distribute SNAP benefits — and they’re singling out states with Democratic governors for punishment. These aren’t funds that go directly to recipients. They cover the basic costs states need to process applications, issue benefits, and keep the program functioning. Without them, states will be forced to cut the number of people they can serve.
This comes just months after the largest SNAP cut in the program’s history, passed in the so-called “Big, Beautiful Bill.” Now the administration is escalating even further by threatening Democratic-led states with a complete loss of food assistance unless they turn over sensitive recipient data — a demand ABC7 reports could block SNAP benefits statewide.
Meanwhile, hunger is surging nationwide. Common Dreams warns that food banks are overwhelmed and communities are in crisis. And despite harmful political rhetoric, undocumented immigrants are already ineligible for SNAP, as confirmed by the American Immigration Council — meaning this funding fight is about feeding eligible families, not expanding benefits.
The USDA’s freeze on administrative funding is a direct attack on hungry families who rely on SNAP, especially in Democratic-led states that now risk losing their ability to deliver benefits at all.
Thanks,
Mary
