Stop Trump’s Cruel Housing Cuts — Before 170,000 People Lose Their Homes

We’re facing an urgent and devastating threat. Politico, The New York Times, and NPR all report that the Trump administration is moving to slash funding for proven homelessness programs, gutting the Continuum of Care (CoC) system and shifting money away from permanent housing. Experts warn these changes could push up to 170,000 people back into homelessness — including veterans, seniors, families, and people with disabilities.

According to Politico, HUD’s new plan would cut permanent housing funding from about $3.3 billion to roughly $1.1 billion, dismantling the core “Housing First” programs that communities rely on. Common Dreams and ProPublica report that these cuts would force local agencies to shut down stable housing programs and replace them with short-term shelters that require work or treatment, approaches researchers say are less effective and more harmful.

Congress has the power to stop this. But they will only act if they feel massive public pressure.

We’re calling on Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Speaker Mike Johnson, the Senate Banking & Housing Committee, and the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing & Urban Development to block these cuts and fully restore CoC funding in the FY2026 budget. Committee work begins soon, and if Congress doesn’t intervene before January, current grants will expire and programs will be forced to close.

Thanks,
Mary
