Tell Congress: End the Post-9/11 Forever Emergency

Twenty-five years after 9/11, America is still living under a national emergency declared in the immediate aftermath of the attacks.

Donald Trump just renewed it again. Every president since George W. Bush has done the same — while Congress has stood by and let “emergency” powers become permanent.

That surrender helped build the post-9/11 system of endless war: military operations across the globe, sweeping national-security powers, and presidents acting first while Congress watches from the sidelines.

Tell Congress: End the post-9/11 national emergency. Reclaim Congress’ constitutional power and stop endless wars.

For 25 years, the United States has fought wars and carried out military operations around the world under the shadow of 9/11. Trillions of dollars have been spent. Millions of lives have been lost. Yet the emergency declared days after the attacks remains in force as if September 2001 never ended.

An emergency that lasts 25 years is not an emergency. It’s a blank check — and Congress has refused to tear it up.

The Constitution gives Congress the power to declare war. Federal law gives Congress the power to terminate national emergencies. But lawmakers of both parties have repeatedly surrendered those responsibilities to the White House.

Enough is enough. Congress must vote to end the post-9/11 emergency, reclaim its authority over war and national security, and stop presidents from keeping extraordinary powers alive forever with the stroke of a pen.

September 11 cannot remain a permanent excuse for endless emergency government and endless war.
