Tell Congress: Stop ICE From Silencing the Press

Journalists keep getting caught in ICE's crackdown. It's time for Congress to defend the free press.

A new investigation from The Guardian details one case after another. Photographer John Abernathy was tackled while documenting protests in Minneapolis. Nashville journalist Estefany Rodríguez-Flórez spent more than two weeks in ICE detention after covering immigration arrests. Journalist Mario Guevara spent more than 100 days detained before being deported to El Salvador.

Journalists from all backgrounds play a vital role in giving a voice to citizens and immigrants. They deserve the freedom to report the effects of Trump's war on immigrants without worrying that critical reporting will make them a target.

Tell Congress: Investigate ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) actions involving journalists and hold them accountable for attacks on the free press.

The stakes extend beyond individual reporters. Journalists document raids, arrests, protests, detention conditions, and the conduct of federal officers. When reporters are detained or prevented from reporting, the public loses independent witnesses to government enforcement.

Congress must demand records, question DHS officials, hold hearings, and expose shortcomings in agency safeguards. They must also stand up for lawful recording, evidence-preservation requirements, disclosure of incidents involving journalists, and rules prohibiting retaliation for protected reporting.
