Tell Democrats: Protect the CFPB Before It’s Too Late

According to NBC News, Russell Vought — Director of the Office of Management and Budget and Acting Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) — has pledged to shut down the agency, ordering staff to suspend examinations, halt investigations, and freeze new rulemaking. Reuters reports his broader plan could lead to thousands of federal layoffs, while Republicans in Congress slashed the CFPB’s funding by nearly half in the Big, Beautiful Bill back in July. This is a direct attack on the only federal agency that protects Americans from predatory lenders, junk fees, and corporate greed.

Democrats are responding — but they need public pressure. Members of the Senate Banking Committee sent a letter demanding answers from Vought, warning that his actions could harm consumers and destabilize markets. Rep. Maxine Waters condemned the attacks and vowed to defend the Bureau’s independence and full funding.

The CFPB has already delivered more than $21 billion in relief to consumers cheated by banks, credit card companies, and debt collectors, according to CNN and the CFPB’s official data. It’s fought discrimination in lending, cracked down on junk fees, and protected veterans, homeowners, and borrowers nationwide. Without it, big banks would once again have free rein to exploit working families.

We need Democrats — including Maxine Waters, Patty Murray, and other committee leaders — to reject any effort to defund or weaken the CFPB and pass legislation that safeguards its independence.

If the CFPB is gutted now, the damage to consumers will be immediate and lasting. We need action — before it’s too late.

Thanks,
Mary
