Tell Federal Agencies: Don’t Gut the Endangered Species Act

We’re facing a critical moment for America’s wildlife. Federal agencies are moving to roll back core protections under the Endangered Species Act — and the public comment window is open right now. If we don’t speak up, these changes could fast-track extinctions and hand decision-making power to industry interests.

Major news outlets — including The Guardian, ABC News, CBS News, and CNN — report that the administration’s plan would eliminate long-standing “blanket protections” for threatened species and restrict the ability to protect critical habitat. According to NPR, removing blanket protections means that newly listed endangered species would no longer receive automatic safeguards while agencies craft individualized rules — a process that can take years.

The ESA has been responsible for pulling iconic species back from the brink — including bald eagles, humpback whales, grizzly bears, and California condors. But The New York Times warns that under these new rules, agencies would be pressured to prioritize corporate interests over the survival of species that have no voice in the political process.

We can still stop this — but only if we act fast.

Thanks,
Mary
