Tell the DOJ: End Trump’s Pre-Election Attack on Rep. Ilhan Omar
Before dawn on Monday, just three weeks from Election Day, federal agents raided the home of Rep. Ilhan Omar as the world watched.
For years, Trump and his far-right allies have gone after Omar with relentless attacks and unproven accusations. Now his immigration enforcement machine has shown up at her home. House Democratic leaders, Minnesota officials, and the Council on American-Islamic Relations have condemned the raid as an abuse of power against a political opponent.
The Justice Department secured the warrant and says a judge approved it. But it has traditionally advised prosecutors to avoid overt steps against candidates within 60 days of an election. This search came 22 days out, while Minnesotans are already voting.
Omar’s constituents should decide her future at the ballot box, not a pre-dawn raid. This appears to be yet another attempt at election interference, and we have to fight back now.
No charges have been announced, and the Justice Department hasn’t said what it’s looking for. Sen. Tina Smith called the search a transparent attempt to interfere in the election.
But this may not stop with Omar. Trump’s administration has already targeted other Democrats. Rep. LaMonica McIver faces federal charges. Sen. Adam Schiff and New York Attorney General Letitia James were accused of mortgage fraud, which they deny.
If this latest attack works, Trump could turn similar tactics on more Democratic candidates before November 3, as he has against political enemies in the past.
Attorney General Blanche can step in today by pausing further overt steps and telling the public who approved the timing. House Democratic leaders have pledged full accountability for DHS and Justice Department abuses if they win the House. If the Justice Department has evidence of a crime, it will still be there on November 4.
Thanks for all that you do,
