Tell the Senate: Reject Keith Sonderling for Labor Secretary

Donald Trump keeps telling working families there isn’t enough to go around. His administration has backed deep cuts to Medicaid and food assistance, threatening healthcare and grocery support that millions of Americans rely on to get by.

Now Trump wants Keith Sonderling to run the Department of Labor. And just as the Senate is deciding whether to confirm him, new reporting has exposed a glaring double standard in Sonderling’s own record.

Popular Information reports that Sonderling participated in at least five investment presentations in China tied to the EB-5 immigrant investor program. At events where he spoke, promotional materials touted access to American public benefits—including unemployment benefits, food stamps, Medicaid, public housing, and school meals—as an advantage for wealthy families who obtained green cards.

We can't allow the Senate to confirm a secretary of labor who once promoted raiding public resources to attract wealthy investors under an administration that keeps slashing them for everyone else.

Trump and his allies keep telling ordinary Americans to accept less while the wealthy get more. They’ve pushed tax cuts tilted toward the rich, attacked the safety net, and worked to hand more of our public lands and resources over to powerful private interests. Working families are expected to sacrifice while those with money and connections get another opportunity to cash in.

That makes Sonderling the wrong person to lead the Department of Labor. The agency is supposed to defend workers’ wages, workplace rights, unemployment insurance, and economic security. Americans need a labor secretary who will fight for working people—not someone who represents the same upside-down priorities that keep rewarding the wealthy while everyone else is told to make do with less.

Sonderling’s nomination advanced from committee by a razor-thin 12-11 vote, but he has not been confirmed by the full Senate. Senators still have the power to stop him, and this is exactly the moment for them to draw a line.
