Tell Zuckerberg: Stop Profiting While Kids Pay the Price

Meta just got hit with a nearly $1 billion reckoning — and instead of accepting responsibility, Mark Zuckerberg’s company says it will appeal.

On Thursday, a New Mexico court ordered Meta to pay $567 million to address the damage Facebook and Instagram have done to children and teens. That comes after an earlier $375 million civil penalty, bringing Meta’s total liability to nearly $1 billion.

The court ordered Meta to fund youth treatment services, prevention, awareness, screenings, and other supports. It also ordered stronger age protections, child-safety reporting systems, deletion of data collected from children under 13, and regular compliance updates.

This is a major victory for families — but it is not enough if Meta treats it like just another legal bill to fight in court.

For years, Meta built platforms designed to keep young people scrolling, comparing, and coming back. Families have watched kids struggle with anxiety, depression, exploitation risks, and the pressure of apps engineered to hold their attention. And Meta kept cashing in.

Meta has the money, technology, and staff to make its platforms safer. What it has lacked is the will to put children’s safety ahead of profit.

Now that Meta says it will appeal, kids and families should not have to wait while Zuckerberg’s company fights to avoid accountability in court.
