The Constitution Is Clear: Trump Cannot Launch a War on Iran Without Congress

Reports from The New York Times indicate that Donald Trump has moved U.S. air and naval forces deeper into the Middle East and could launch military strikes on Iran as soon as this weekend.

Congress has not authorized war.

The Constitution is clear: only Congress has the power to declare war. The 1973 War Powers Resolution requires consultation and limits unauthorized military action. A unilateral strike on Iran would bypass that authority and risk dragging the United States into another catastrophic Middle East conflict without the consent of the American people.

Axios reports oil markets are already bracing for disruption. NBC News confirms U.S. military assets are being repositioned. CNN reports discussions inside the administration about potential timelines that could unfold within days. We’ve seen this pattern before — escalation first, accountability later.

The Costs of War Project at Brown University estimates that post-9/11 wars have cost trillions of dollars and resulted in hundreds of thousands of direct deaths. A war with Iran — a nation of more than 85 million people with significant regional influence — would be even more dangerous and destabilizing.

Congress must act before any strike is launched.

We are calling on every member of Congress to publicly oppose any unauthorized military action and pass a binding War Powers resolution prohibiting war with Iran without explicit approval.

Thanks,
Mary
