The Department of Education Is Under Attack — Congress Must Act Now

In partnership with

Major outlets — including Politico, CNBC, AP News, The New York Times, The Guardian, and NPR — report that the Trump administration has launched a sweeping plan to break apart the Department of Education.

On November 18, Politico revealed a restructuring that would shift core offices to agencies like Labor, Interior, State, and Health and Human Services. CNBC, AP News, and NPR note that this is the most aggressive step yet toward dismantling the department, threatening federal protections for millions of students. The Guardian’s reporting highlights how civil rights enforcement, disability services, and student aid oversight could all be weakened.

This plan puts essential safeguards at risk: civil rights protections, support for students with disabilities and low-income families, and oversight of the entire federal student loan system. Splitting these functions across multiple agencies would create confusion, inconsistent enforcement, and reduced accountability.

Congress now has only a short window to intervene.
