The Deportation Machine Is Expanding, One Warehouse at a Time

The Trump administration is quietly building a new system of mass immigrant detention — by buying up warehouses across the country and converting them into massive ICE detention centers.

Reporting from The Guardian and The Marshall Project shows the Department of Homeland Security is pursuing “mega” facilities designed to hold thousands of people at a time, often with little transparency and minimal local input. Forbes has warned these purchases could move quickly, leaving communities scrambling to understand what’s being built and why.

Across the country, The Marshall Project has documented similar community struggles from Arizona to Georgia, where proposed warehouse detention facilities could dramatically alter small towns’ populations and strain local water, sewer, and emergency services. Many residents feel completely blindsided by federal plans being carried out without meaningful local input.

The New York Times has also highlighted how these detention plans are unfolding even in communities where many voters supported Trump — raising alarm across political lines.

This is what mass detention looks like: a sprawling, taxpayer-funded deportation machine built out of industrial warehouses.

We can stop it — but only if we act now.

Thanks,
Mary
