The Pentagon just crossed a line — and press freedom is at risk.

The Pentagon just told reporters they have to sign a pledge — agreeing not to publish even unclassified information without the military’s approval.

That’s not journalism. That’s censorship.

According to The Hill, CBS News, The Washington Post, and The New York Times, these new rules would give the Pentagon sweeping control over what reporters can say — and punish those who don’t comply. Journalists who refuse could lose their credentials or access entirely.

Press freedom advocates are calling it what it is: a direct threat to the First Amendment.

If the Pentagon can decide what stories get told, what’s to stop other agencies from following suit? Once censorship starts, it doesn’t stop — it spreads. And when it spreads, the truth disappears.

That’s why we’re asking major media outlets to take a stand and refuse to comply with the Pentagon’s censorship demands.

The public has a right to know what its government is doing — especially when lives and billions of dollars are at stake. If reporters are silenced, we all lose.

This is about more than press access. It’s about democracy itself.

Thanks,
Mary
