The Senate Must Reject This Voter Suppression Bill

Last night, during his State of the Union address, Donald Trump again pushed false claims of widespread voter fraud — and called on Congress to pass the SAVE America Act.

The House has already approved the bill. Now it’s headed to the Senate.

According to reporting from The New York Times and Democracy Docket, the SAVE America Act would require Americans to provide documentary proof of citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate, to register to vote. The Brennan Center for Justice has found that more than 21 million eligible Americans don’t have ready access to those documents. Married women whose names have changed could face particular barriers.

Noncitizen voting in federal elections is already illegal and extremely rare. Voting rights advocates warn this bill would instead create sweeping new obstacles for eligible voters — especially seniors, low-income Americans, and rural communities.

Senate leaders are facing mounting pressure to take up the bill quickly. That’s why public pressure right now matters.

When constituents speak out in large numbers, Senators listen. Raising the political cost of supporting voter suppression can stop this bill before it becomes law.

Tell the Senate: Vote NO on the SAVE America Act. Protect the freedom to vote for every eligible American.

Thanks,
Mary
