The Social Security Administration s cutting in-person access. Tell Congress: keep offices open.
Major outlets are sounding the alarm: the Associated Press, Reuters, and MarketWatch report that the Social Security Administration is pushing a plan to cut in-person field office visits by 50% in fiscal year 2026. Common Dreams and The Daily Beast warn that this could pave the way for more field office closures.
That’s not “modernization.” That’s shutting people out.
Every day, people rely on local Social Security offices to fix payment issues, replace cards, apply for benefits, and get disability help. When offices close, or in-person access disappears, seniors, disabled people, rural residents, and tribal communities pay the price — especially anyone without reliable internet or who can’t navigate a complex system alone. The Urban Institute has warned that these closures hit rural and tribal communities hardest.
Senators Elizabeth Warren, Ron Wyden, Bernie Sanders, and Kirsten Gillibrand are demanding answers from SSA Commissioner Frank Bisignano. Now we need Congress to back that up with action: protect every field office and keep in-person service available.
Thanks,
Mary
